Music Ministry Tips: Part I of Seventy times Seven

Welcome to Music Ministry Tips! As fellow church musicians, we hope you discover many simple tips and tricks for Prayerful Song!

I thought I would start this site off with a subject dear to my heart: worship through Prayerful Song.

How beautiful is the gift of music? How much more beautiful is it then to return the gift as an offering of  worship? One of the Fathers of Christianity taught Qui cantat, bis orat, “to sing is to pray twice”. How honored are we, the music leaders and church musicians, to lead the assembly in song-full and soulful prayer?

This is something I try not to take lightly, but often do. It is all too easy to do. I get caught up in the music preparations. Are the instruments in tune? What was that intro again? All the details necessary for a smooth blend of bible readings, prayer, and song. It is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.

What to do? One of the best ways I know to re-focus is through prayer itself. Before the first song, close your eyes and pray. If with a band, circle up. Offer up everything you are about to do as a gift to Him. At this time I ask that He bless our voices, our instruments, our musical offering.

It is amazing what this simple prayer does to refocus. It is a reminder that we are about lead souls in Prayerful Song. Then, it is time to pull the microphone close or pick up the instrument, and engage in the beautiful act of worship through Prayerful Song.

Does your group of church musicians do something similar? What are your thoughts?  Add a comment by clicking on the 'comment' link at the top-right of this post.
